What people are saying about Covanta Energy

Over the last 25 years, we have maintained a solid reputation for providing safe and reliable energy from waste. That’s why we are extremely proud of the wide array of positive feedback we often receive from clients, partners and community leaders:

Virginia Governor Robert McDonnell during his 2011 visit to Covanta “I would like to thank you for the opportunity to tour your Energy-from-Waste facility in Lorton [VA]. The commitment that you have shown in implementing environmentally conscious and sound renewable energy projects that address the waste disposal needs of the local community, as well as your dedication to support the local workforce, are highly appreciated by the citizens of the Commonwealth. I was touched by your commitment and I am happy that I could join your organisation in this worthwhile initiative. ”  – Excerpted from a letter sent by Virginia Governor, Robert F. McDonnell after his visit to Covanta Fairfax (VA)

Covanta Energy has been recognized by the U.S. EPA “I was very impressed with the Waste-to-Energy process and your commitment to environmental improvements… Covanta Hempstead is a great example of the type of technology that Puerto Rico might use in building waste-to-energy facilities to manage its solid waste. ”  – Excerpted from a letter sent by a director in the division of environmental planning and protection of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency following a visit to Covanta Hempstead (NY).

“In Alexandria, we recognise the quantity and sources of energy used by local government, businesses and residents affect our environment and quality of life, and we have committed to managing our energy supply and usage in a sustainable manner. A prime example of this commitment is the City’s partnership in an Energy-from-Waste facility for more than 25 years. This facility generates enough clean, renewable energy to supply power to approximately 20,000 homes via the combustion of municipal solid waste. Diversion of our municipal solid waste from a landfill to the energy-from-waste facility reduces the city’s carbon emissions by approximately 160,000 metric tons annually. ”  – Excerpted from hearing testimony on climate-related polices and economic growth given by the Mayor William d. Euille of Alexandria, VA where Covanta Alexandria is located.

“I would like to thank your team in Preston, Connecticut for their invaluable assistance and participation in our first ever nationwide Prescription Drug Takeback held throughout Connecticut on Saturday September 25, 2010…It was great working with your Preston crew. Our guys had a great time with them and they were top notch. Their support helped us make the nationwide Prescription Drug Takeback event in Connecticut the success that it was and we are truly grateful. ”  – Excerpted from a letter sent by the assistant special agent in charge at the New England Division of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration in New Haven, CT regarding Covanta SECONN providing assured destruction of collected drugs via the energy-from-waste process.

“I am writing this letter to thank you and all of Covanta Kent for the fine job done in accommodating yesterday’s tour. The members of the Board of Public Works, the Country's Assistant Administrator and DPW staff were all impressed with the operation and general appearance of the Facility. The plant was clean, clutter free and many areas freshly painted. The tipping floor and roadways were in excellent shape despite the morning's rain. The fact that this was done in the middle of a scheduled outage is even more impressive. My hat is off to everyone. Thanks again for the great job! ”  – A letter from the waste-to-energy administrative manager with the Kent County  (MI) Department of Public Works  following a facility tour.

Keep Lee County Beautiful “I remember walking that barren ground in 1993 and wondering if the critics were right, ‘is this a good idea?’ Well it wasn't, it was a great idea and continues to build a solid reputation in the community. On behalf of the entire board of directors of Keep Lee County Beautiful Inc. please accept our gratitude not only for operating a nationally recognised WTE plant, we expected that, but for your staff’s direct connection to the community...We are proud to be affiliated with Covanta/Lee County and look forward to another decade of partnership. Our hats off to the entire Covanta team! ”  – Excerpted from a letter sent from the executive director of Keep Lee County Beautiful INC to Covanta Lee (FL).

“Covanta has been a cooperative and valuable partner both to accomplish reductions in waste toxicity through their support and assistance with our mercury collecting efforts and by supporting our public education efforts. I am appreciative of the professionalism that Covanta exhibits and their commitment to improving the environment. That commitment is demonstrated by their operational practices to minimize emissions, by their stewardship, and by their progressive attitude toward improving the characteristics of the waste stream. These are efforts consistent with our mission. ”  – Excerpted from a letter sent by the executive director of the South Shore Recycling Cooperative  to Covanta SEMASS (MA)

Jill Buck, GoGreen Initiative “I have toured [Covanta] facilities in California, Minnesota, and Pennsylvania, and paid particular attention to the monitoring systems in their control rooms. I trust the EPA’s [U.S. Environmental Protection Agency] stringent air quality standards and was very pleased to see that Covanta Energy plants not only meet those standards, but also exceed those standards by 90 percent in many cases. Covanta Energy plants have 24/7 live feeds of their emission control data which enable them to ensure quality operations and performance: Covanta has a clean track record that is truly impressive. ”  – Excerpted from a letter sent to Covanta Energy from Jill Buck, founder of the Go Green Initiative.

City of Tulsa “Thank you very much for the recent tour of your energy plant. We were able to learn a lot about your processes and it helped us understand how converting waste-to-energy works. I would also like to thank you for working with us on accepting the surplus wood chips from our mulch site. Working together to create good things for the community of Tulsa benefits everyone and I look forward to working with you in years to come. ”  – Excerpted from a letter from the City of Tulsa Public Works Department to Covanta Tulsa (OK).
