What We Do
Did you know that Covanta Energy is one of the world’s largest owners and operators of infrastructure for the conversion of waste to energy (known as “Energy-from-Waste” or “EfW”), as well as other renewable energy production and waste disposal-related businesses? It’s a fact that we are very proud of.
Covanta operates and/or has ownership positions in over 40 Energy-from-Waste facilities, primarily located in North America, and over 20 additional energy generation facilities, including other renewable energy production facilities in the Americas, as well as Asia. We also operate other waste management businesses complementary to our core EfW business including waste transfer stations and ash residue disposal sites.
Since entering the European market in 2005, Covanta has been working on delivering a number of EfW projects in the UK and Ireland with a total of seven projects now being planned. Each of these projects has been located with consideration to transport links and commercial and household waste arisings.
Covanta’s proposed developments represent a £2 billion investment into the UK’s waste and energy infrastructure market. Furthermore, it will provide the UK and Ireland with approximately 2.5 million MW hours of sustainable electricity annually while diverting approximately 3 million tonnes of waste away from landfill every year.
