Covanta in the community

Covanta Energy is a socially responsible organisation and is committed to working with the communities in which it operates for their mutual benefit.

In the US, where the company began, there have been countless schemes that have had a positive impact on the local community. Perhaps one of the more noteworthy of these and the most heart-warming to our British customers, was the founding of the Covanta Energy Soccer League.

In Wallingford, a small community in Connecticut, a local school wanted to start a soccer team to encourage the students to participate in outdoor sports. The school approached Covanta Energy for help with equipment and to set up a space for the team to have regular practices.

Through Covanta funding, the school was able to purchase footballs, practice equipment and team strips. Since the team began, the students have been eager to compete with other teams to exercise their skills and practise their game, and subsequently the Wallingford Invitation Soccer Tournament (TWIST) was founded. Covanta became the major sponsor of this tournament, which now attracts more than 135 teams and over 2,500 players annually.
